The Story of Spirit Creatures
Spirit Creatures, Great and Small is a family/friend based home business. Through our Totem Necklaces with the
unique characteristics of each of the creatures, we hope in some small way we are increasing the awareness and
appreciation of all life.
Spirit Creatures got its start in 1996 when Dave started carving miniature animal figures from wood and soapstone.
He would go to Native American festivals in the Southeast, teaching students about the use of soapstone in early
Native American cultures.
The students were fascinated by the stories he told of the animals. Many wanted to purchase the carvings but could
not afford the delicate hand carved figures. Another vendor showed Dave some animal beads that were quite
affordable and suggested that he make and sell the necklaces so the kids would not go away empty-handed.
The totem necklaces quickly became extremely popular. The totem necklaces found their way into State Parks,
Nature Centers, Trading Posts and Scout Shops where they became popular with adults as well as well as with the kids.
The repetitive process of assembling the necklaces or the necklace kits serves as a form of relaxation and mental therapy
for Dave, Mom, Owen, Eric, Kristen, Michael and Brock. Occasionally, other friends help out with the extreme demand of
summer camps. We enjoy the rhythmic task and want to thank you for your interest in Spirit Creatures, Great and Small.
